welcome to october…

Hello, October. I’ve been waiting for you…and not always very patiently. But, you’re here now and I am so thankful!

The cooler mornings mean I am much more motivated to work outside and get the tired Summer landscape all ready for Autumn. Pots of mums make their appearance now that it’s not scorching hot and they stand a chance of survival! I make a concerted effort at getting all the pesky weeds and grass out of the beds.

As the days and nights get cooler, the berries on the nandinas will turn a brilliant red. These are among my favorite bushes, reminding me of childhood and my mother’s lush flowerbeds, which were always anchored by this variety of shrub. They reek of “old fashioned” and that’s probably why I love them so!

Pumpkins get tucked here…there…and everywhere! Every trip to the market means a couple more will join the pumpkin patch, so we have an abundant selection for carving when Halloween rolls around. Those left behind after our family’s carving party will remain until Thanksgiving when the Christmas elves push them out of the way…

There are leftover blooms that survived the Summer heat and make a showing right up until the first freeze. This red bloomed geranium is still going strong and lends another pop of color to Fall’s display.

While the front garden here at our little cottage isn’t going to make the pages of a magazine, it makes me smile every time I turn the corner and pull up in the drive. It may not be showy, or even very well manicured, but it is a work in progress. Changing with each season. And this season is most definitely its finest!

Welcome to October!
