texas hill country getaway…

Our favorite getaway to the Texas Hill Country almost always involves a few days in Fredericksburg. We can be there in about three hours, pulling the fifth wheel along less traveled two-lane roads, making this is the perfect destination if we have about three or four days to sneak away.

We have yet to grow tired of the old world charm of this small town. It’s a welcome little gem where we can slow down and enjoy a slower pace. With shopping, dining, historic homes and nearby Luckenbach for live music, Fredericksburg offers enough variety to do as much – or as little – as you want. In short, it is the perfect place for us to balance out activities and entertainment with rest and relaxation. I always come back refreshed and inspired from our visits.

Although the main thoroughfare caters strictly to tourist traffic (and lots of it!), we still try to set aside a weekday morning to stroll along the covered sidewalks and do a little shopping. Of particular note on this last trip were the stunning planters and hanging baskets along Main Street. Lush shades of green, vibrant pops of color here and there, they are beautifully designed – yet the nature and variety of containers made them seem organic and right at home along the walkways.

Benches here and there provide a welcome place to sit and sip a drink while doing a bit of “people watching” – which, truth be told, I find just as much fun as the shopping.

While it is usually the summer months when we visit, we have gone as late as early November and the town is just as charming in the fall. The crowds are a bit less overwhelming and the leaves are turning; the natural light is different and there is a distinctively autumnal feel in the air, making it pleasant and nostalgic all at once. A stroll along Main Street in the late afternoon is simply perfect at this time of year!

Although we just stayed four days in June, I have no doubt we will be back along about October or November of this year for another fall trip. I am already yearning for and anticipating it, with all my heart!

    1. Fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit there! I am hoping we can head back closer to Thanksgiving or just after so we can see the town all decked out for Christmas.

Thank you for visiting Janie’s Porch and saying “hello”!
