We rolled into a new month and the weather finally changed up a bit the last couple of weeks. Not only have we been staying below 100 degrees every day, but we have enjoyed several days (and inches) of rain. It has been pretty wonderful! When that afternoon sun takes on a different glow and the mornings are a bit cooler, I know my favorite season is bearing down on us.
Something we missed this summer…

It finally cooled off enough to go to the drive-in for a burger and rings for the first time in a couple of months. It’s just been too dang hot to sit in the car and eat this Summer and we sure had missed this place! There is such a rush of nostalgia when we pull in under the rusting metal awnings and walk up to the window to place our order; then sit in the truck and do a little “people watching” until our order is called over the loud speaker.

Oh, the simple joy of a burger cooked on a flat top grill and fresh homemade onion rings! Doesn’t get much better than that, folks ~ except for their excellent homemade ice cream!

Work around the house…
We took advantage of the softer ground after the rain to pull some weeds and clean up the flower bed along the front of the house. Our poor crepe myrtle had been so damaged by the heat ~ it really appeared to have died, despite our watering it regularly. But, here it is sporting new growth and I am so thankful it isn’t dead! I wonder if it will go full cycle and get to bloom again before the first freeze? Only time will tell ~ I have never seen it do this before and don’t quite know what to expect.

I also swept down the porch and started dressing her up for the new season ~ can’t wait to add some pumpkins soon!

On the pup front…
If you are a returning visitor to the porch, you’re already acquainted with Rusty. He’s a pistol ~ bet on it! When you see him like this, beware ~ he is just recharging for the next round!!!

We are still working with house training and he has his “feral” moments when he just forgets and squats in the midst of play. But, overall, we’re getting there! Unfortunately, he has had a bit of the runny poops the last couple of days, which has set us back a bit. Here’s to hoping that whatever he ingested ~ and it could be ANYTHING since he puts EVERYTHING in his mouth ~ clears his system soon and we can get back on track. He is my little sidekick and I don’t even remember what it was like when I got to sleep past 5:30 AM….
Playing on Repeat…
This song right here…a classic, but still so good! Big Daddy Weave does an excellent cover, but I am still partial to Rich Mullins’ original version and it’s in my daily playlist. He has been gone almost 25 years, but his legacy of the Gospel in music lives on and on…
“Well sometimes my life just don’t make sense at all
When the mountains look so big
And my faith just seems so small
So hold me Jesus ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace
And I wake up in the night and feel the dark
It’s so hot inside my soul
I swear there must be blisters on my heart
So hold me Jesus ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace
Surrender don’t come natural to me
I’d rather fight You for something I don’t really want
Than to take what You give that I need
And I’ve beat my head against so many walls
Now I’m falling down I’m falling on my knees
And this Salvation Army band is playing this hymn
And Your grace rings out so deep
It makes my resistance seem so thin
I’m singing hold me Jesus ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace “
~Rich Mullins
Surrender don’t come easy, does it? Can you relate? Perhaps that is why this song speaks to my heart the way it does and I never tire of hearing it. That, and the simple delivery ~ just a man and his piano, so unpretentious.
Wrapping it all up…
Which brings to mind this verse which brings me great comfort, these words from Jesus himself.

When the world seems crazy and spinning out of control, remember this invitation to lay it all down at the feet of the One who truly brings peace. And in the daily daily grind, find rest and comfort here, also. For we have been given the Holy Spirit to comfort, guide and sustain us on the mountaintops, in the valleys and all the places in between!
Until next time, stay well and look for the little things that mean so much in life!
